My first blog post
Welcome to my very first blog post on charleshaworth.com.
I am a business executive within the renewable energy space, who has spent most of my life living in different countries around the globe, including: Nigeria, Egypt, UK, USA, and UAE to name a few. I currently live in Paris, France.
I started my adulthood studying Physics at Imperial College London where I completed a PhD in laser Physics. Following this, I joined GE as part of a graduate leadership program which then allowed me to launch my business career. After 14 years and billions of $ of equipment and service agreement sales, I am now leading GE’s global commercial operations for the offshore wind business. If you want to know more about my career you can checkout my linkedin page.

So why, you may ask, am I taking the time to launch a website and start blogging?
In early 2020 I received some feedback from one of my colleagues:
Consider: Providing tips and tricks to networking, pc/e-mail organisation, and or best practices you’ve developed throughout your time at GE. Consider writing a blog maybe of some sort? To share your best practices, insights learnt or interesting knowledge to not just your direct team but also the broader organisation & external network.
This really struck a chord with me and I starting thinking about how I could implement something along these lines, but of course all the excuses started in my mind:
- I am so busy with work, how will I find time?
- I am not very interesting! Why would anyone spend time reading my blog?
- I don’t know how to set up a blog where do I start?
- I am terrible at writing, it’s just not my forte…
- Maybe work will not like me sharing outside of the company?
During the Covid-19 lockdown I was doing my usual time wasting watching back-to-back YouTube videos and I came across Ali Abdaal (https://aliabdaal.com). Ali is a working doctor in the NHS and has a successful YouTube channel and side businesses. What he is able to achieve with his time blew me away and in one of his videos “3 books that changed my life” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hv1gOEY3cs4) he listed the following:
The 4-hour workweek by Tim Ferris
Show your work by Austin Kleon
Anything you want – Derek Sivers
I immediately downloaded these on kindle and audible (so I could listen while running)
I will review these books in a later post but these books and Ali Abdaal are the reason you are reading this now.
So what’s next?
Watch this space. I love sharing ideas and want a platform to give back to the wider community. If I can help a few people then I will have achieved my goal here.
Oh and I hope to have some fun and learn something new in the process.
To be continued…
Sounds very promising!
I look forward to reading your review of the three books. I am curious to discover your takeaways of “Show your work”.
Wow that’s impressive Charles, I was curious about what you might include on this site but of course there’s masses to share.
I will try to find time to read the books you suggest.
Something about seeing the links in print rather than casual comments really works for me.
